It may only be March but summer will be here before you know it. And where nicer to spend some time than in our gardens. Unfortunately a garden can be a thirsty commodity and use up a lot of water. Fortunately there are ways to reduce the amount of water that you your garden uses, and here are a few tips to help you accomplish just that.
Mulch Your Flower Beds
A lot of water can evaporate on warm, sunny days so try to reduce this by adding a thick mulch to the top of your soil. Popular substances include the use of impermeable membranes cut to size, bark chippings or even old grass clippings.
Choose Drought-Resistant Varieties
With so many plant species available there are of course a huge number that will do very well with minimal water, so why not take the time to select these varieties? Many succulent plants and those hailing from the Mediterranean region are good choices.
Water Correctly
Certainly don’t use wasteful sprinklers, but also consider installing a drop feed system or at least carefully watering your garden with a watering can. This way you can ensure that the water you put into the ground is directed straight at the roots of your plants.
Also try to water outside of the hottest parts of the day – first thing in the morning or early evening tend to work well – which will not only reduce water loss through evaporation but also reduce the risk of your plants leaves getting scalded.
Collect Rainwater
Lastly try to use what rain water you can. Install a water butt attached to your guttering ideally or alternatively just leave out lots of containers when it rains. This way you can use this water to refresh your garden rather than using water which has been carefully cleaned and pumped to you from miles away.
