6 Eco-Friendly Tips When Moving House

As I’m currently in the process of moving (I am sitting here in my office surrounded by boxes as I write!) it got me thinking about all the ways I have tried to make my house move as green as possible. Here, then, are a number of tips that you can use next time you move house to make as little impact on the environment as possible.
Use Recycled Packing Boxes
Try to source boxes that are either made from recycled material, or even reuse those which are thrown away by companies. You may well be doing them a favour by getting rid of their boxes for them and this will also help to save you money. Equally once you have finished with the boxes ensure they are at least recycled if not reused rather than being sent to landfill.
Use The Right Size Van
If you are moving yourself, try to estimate the size of the van or lorry you will need accurately. If you are driving some distance then hiring a van larger than you actually need will mean that you use more fuel than necessary which is of course both wasteful of your money but also of the environment.
Change Your Address
Many people use a mail redirection service when they move and then change their address with their bank, doctor etc. later on. However appreciate that if you do this, mail will be sent to your old address, and then will be sent on to your new one. Two journeys – most likely in a van – when you could have created only one. So try to plan ahead and change your address with as many companies as possible as quickly as possible.
Pack Carefully
The more carefully you pack, the less chance there is of damage occurring to your belongings. Not only are damages annoying but of course they will likely then also have to be replaced. In addition, careful packing can help you fit more items into the same space, so giving you less volume to transport. As a side note, some people report success using popcorn instead of polystyrene chips to help protect delicate items.
Declutter
A further way to have to transport as little as possible on the road is to take the time to declutter before packing. Decide what you *really* need and separate this from the items you really no longer need, want or like. These items can then be given to a local charity shop so helping the charity and lessening the amount you need to pack and transport.
Eat Your Food
Finally, try to transport as little food as possible. Food can be bought the other end, frozen food can defrost and you are adding food miles too so try to use up as much of your food as you can before a move, and then purchase what you need when you reach the other end.
